# Power BI Authoring MCP Server (Local)

A local MCP server for editing Power BI semantic models. It lets AI assistants manage tables, relationships, DAX measures, and TMDL project files directly from chat.

## What it does

The server connects AI agents to Power BI Desktop and Fabric semantic models. Assistants can create or modify tables, columns, relationships, and measures. It also handles bulk renaming, model security definitions, and batch edits with transaction support.

The server validates and executes DAX queries to test calculations during development. Operations stay strictly within data modeling. It cannot modify visual report pages or diagram layouts.

Before calling any modeling tools, you must accept the EULA. The server blocks all interactions until you confirm agreement via the `--accepteula` argument or the `PBI_MODELING_MCP_ACCEPT_EULA=true` environment variable.

## Requirements
- Needs: Node.js (commands run via npx)
- Works with: Power BI

## Install

```
### Codex
**Platform CLI**
```bash
codex mcp add power-bi-authoring-mcp-server-local -- npx -y @microsoft/powerbi-modeling-mcp
```
### Cursor
**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "power-bi-authoring-mcp-server-local": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "@microsoft/powerbi-modeling-mcp"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```
### GitHub Copilot
            ]
        }
    }
}
```

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini mcp add power-bi-authoring-mcp-server-local npx -y @microsoft/powerbi-modeling-mcp
```

## When to use it
- create and modify tables, columns, and relationships in semantic models
- test and validate DAX measures against model data
- perform batch renames and security rule updates across model objects
- manage Power BI TMDL project files programmatically

## Example prompts
- Validate the DAX syntax for the Total Revenue measure and run a test query.
- Create a one-to-many relationship between Sales and Date tables.
- Bulk rename columns in the Customers table to follow standard naming conventions.
