# Penfield Memory

Keeps decisions, preferences and context alive between sessions, and links them into a knowledge graph. Useful when your agent starts cold every time.

## What it does

Penfield Memory is a remote MCP server exposing 17 tools across four groups: memory, knowledge graph, context and artifacts. Recall runs hybrid — BM25 keywords, vector similarity and graph connections together. The same store follows you into whichever editor you connect from.

Setup goes through the portal: sign up, wire the server in, then approve the OAuth prompt. The docs suggest opening a session with `awaken()` to pull identity context and `reflect()` to orient on recent work, which defaults to the last 7 days. Skip both and the agent has nothing to work from.

Everything talks to `https://mcp.penfield.app/`, so you need network access and a signed-in account. Windsurf, Cline, Roo Code and Zed take a manual block in their own settings files; Cursor has a deeplink. On OpenClaw the native plugin skips the MCP proxy layer entirely.

## Requirements
- Remote server: `https://mcp.penfield.app/`

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI: remote server**
```bash
claude mcp add --transport http penfield-mcp https://mcp.penfield.app/
```

### Codex

**Platform CLI: remote server**
```bash
codex mcp add penfield-memory --url https://mcp.penfield.app/
```

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "penfield-memory": {
            "url": "https://mcp.penfield.app/"
        }
    }
}
```

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "penfield-memory": {
            "type": "http",
            "url": "https://mcp.penfield.app/"
        }
    }
}
```

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI: remote server**
```bash
gemini mcp add -t http penfield-memory https://mcp.penfield.app/
```

## When to use it
- carry architectural decisions across coding sessions
- reload last week's context when a session starts
- link scattered notes into a knowledge graph
- checkpoint a long project and resume it later
- keep one set of preferences across editors

## Example prompts
- Call `awaken()` then `reflect()` and summarise what we worked on this week.
- Store the decision to use Postgres instead of SQLite, with the reason.
- Search memory for everything about auth and show how the entries connect.
