## What it does

This community integration exposes Snowflake Cortex tools directly to MCP clients. It retrieves unstructured text for RAG workflows and runs queries against warehouse tables. All tools are registered in `services/configuration.yaml`. This requires manual setup.

Access control relies on statement filters. In the configuration file, admins can block destructive commands like `Drop` or `Alter`. Authentication runs through the Snowflake Python Connector with support for passwords and SSO.

Snowflake-Labs marked this repository as deprecated. Maintenance has ended, so the authors advise moving to the official Snowflake MCP Server. Without valid environment credentials and a prepared YAML file, the server will not start.

## Requirements
- Needs: Python and uv (commands run via uvx)
- Environment variables: `SNOWFLAKE_ACCOUNT`, `SNOWFLAKE_HOST`, `SNOWFLAKE_USER`, `SNOWFLAKE_PASSWORD`, `SNOWFLAKE_ROLE`, `SNOWFLAKE_WAREHOUSE`, `SNOWFLAKE_PASSCODE`, `SNOWFLAKE_PRIVATE_KEY`, `SNOWFLAKE_PRIVATE_KEY_FILE`, `SNOWFLAKE_PRIVATE_KEY_FILE_PWD` — keys and tokens: ask the human for the values, never commit them or put them in shared files.
- Works with: Snowflake

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI**
```bash
claude mcp add --env SNOWFLAKE_ACCOUNT=<SNOWFLAKE_ACCOUNT> --env SNOWFLAKE_HOST=<SNOWFLAKE_HOST> --env SNOWFLAKE_USER=<SNOWFLAKE_USER> --env SNOWFLAKE_PASSWORD=<SNOWFLAKE_PASSWORD> --env SNOWFLAKE_ROLE=<SNOWFLAKE_ROLE> --transport stdio oss-snowflake-mcp-server -- uvx snowflake-labs-mcp
```
Replace <…> with your own values. 8 more environment variables are in the server README. uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from snowflake-labs-mcp <command>

### Codex

**Platform CLI**
```bash
codex mcp add oss-snowflake-mcp-server --env SNOWFLAKE_ACCOUNT=<SNOWFLAKE_ACCOUNT> --env SNOWFLAKE_HOST=<SNOWFLAKE_HOST> --env SNOWFLAKE_USER=<SNOWFLAKE_USER> --env SNOWFLAKE_PASSWORD=<SNOWFLAKE_PASSWORD> --env SNOWFLAKE_ROLE=<SNOWFLAKE_ROLE> -- uvx snowflake-labs-mcp
```
Replace <…> with your own values. 8 more environment variables are in the server README. uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from snowflake-labs-mcp <command>

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:

## When to use it
- query unstructured documents in Cortex Search for RAG workflows
- interact with structured datasets using Cortex Analyst models
- run SQL commands under statement permission restrictions
- modify Snowflake objects directly from the assistant session

## Example prompts
- Retrieve matching policy sections from the Cortex Search index.
- Query monthly revenue figures using the Cortex Analyst model.
- Run a `Select` statement on the transactions table to view recent entries.
