# optics-mcp

Connects your AI coding assistant to the Sunex lens and image sensor catalog. Handy when matching camera optics to sensor dimensions during hardware design.

## What it does

This MCP server queries Sunex optics data directly from the model prompt. Five bundled tools handle sensor lookups, compute sensor geometry in millimeters, and filter lenses by optical circle or field of view. The agent can quickly check which lens covers a given pixel count and pitch.

The project runs as a lightweight Cloudflare Worker proxying requests to the public `optics-online.com` catalog API. It is completely read-only and requires zero authentication tokens. Communication relies on streamable HTTP via `https://mcp.sunex-ai.com/mcp` or legacy SSE on `/sse`.

## Requirements
- Remote server: `https://mcp.sunex-ai.com/sse`

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI: remote server**
```bash
claude mcp add --transport sse optics-mcp https://mcp.sunex-ai.com/sse
```

### Codex

**Codex**
- Codex connects MCP servers over stdio and streamable HTTP only, and this server speaks SSE

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "optics-mcp": {
            "url": "https://mcp.sunex-ai.com/sse"
        }
    }
}
```

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "optics-mcp": {
            "type": "sse",
            "url": "https://mcp.sunex-ai.com/sse"
        }
    }
}
```

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI: remote server**
```bash
gemini mcp add -t sse optics-mcp https://mcp.sunex-ai.com/sse
```

## When to use it
- match compatible lenses to a chosen CMOS sensor model
- calculate optical sensor height, width, and diagonal dimensions
- filter lenses by aperture, field of view, or price limit
- pull sample pricing and request-for-quote links for optical parts

## Example prompts
- Suggest a fast wide-angle lens with F/2.0 or lower for Sony IMX577.
- Calculate the sensor diagonal in millimeters for IMX477.
- Search for fisheye lenses priced under 100 dollars.
