# ontomics

ontomics indexes a codebase’s domain concepts, naming patterns, and functions with similar behavior. Use it to explore project vocabulary and trace how concepts connect through code.

## What it does

The server groups related symbols into concepts, detects naming patterns, and finds functions whose implementations behave alike. Ask it for a symbol’s signature and relationships, follow a concept through call chains, or compare the project vocabulary with a Git ref. Behavioral matching uses CodeRankEmbed on function bodies.

Its MCP tools can suggest names that fit a project, locate files and signatures tied to a concept, and export domain knowledge as YAML for another repository. It supports Python, TypeScript, JavaScript, and Rust, detected from file extensions. Indexing requires a Git repository: without a `.git/` directory, the server refuses to index unless you pass `--force`.

Install the package and register the server separately. In Claude Code, registration starts `ontomics` through `npx`. The server detects the repository and indexes it on first run; it refuses to index home, root, or temporary directories.

## Requirements
- Needs: Node.js (commands run via npx)

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI**
```bash
claude mcp add ontomics -- npx -y @ontomics/ontomics
```

### Codex

**Platform CLI**
```bash
codex mcp add ontomics -- npx -y @ontomics/ontomics
```

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "ontomics": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "@ontomics/ontomics"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "ontomics": {
            "type": "stdio",
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "@ontomics/ontomics"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini mcp add ontomics npx -y @ontomics/ontomics
```

## When to use it
- find related terms and occurrences for a domain concept
- trace a concept through code call chains
- check an identifier against project naming patterns
- find functions with similar behavior
- compare domain vocabulary with a Git ref

## Example prompts
- Find concepts related to “transform” and show where they occur.
- Check whether `spatial_transform` fits this project’s naming patterns and suggest a canonical name.
- Find functions whose behavior resembles `spatial_transform()`.
