# OfficeIMO Document Tools

An MCP server that lets an agent browse, search and convert local documents and mail stores, with access kept inside a bounded scope.

## What it does

Once connected, the server hands the agent a set of tools for office files: read what is inside, locate a passage, pull out data, move content into another format. Handy when a repo carries specs, reports or mail archives and you would rather ask questions in chat than open every file yourself.

Under the hood sit OfficeIMO's .NET libraries, which parse and write document formats without Microsoft Office or LibreOffice. Word, Excel and PowerPoint lean on the Open XML SDK; PDF, Markdown, RTF, OpenDocument, EPUB and mail stores such as EML, MSG, PST and mbox are handled by the project's own code. File access stays bounded, so the server works against a defined area rather than the whole filesystem.

Check that your format is actually covered before wiring it up. Some converters report diagnostics when the target format cannot carry everything from the source, and legacy `.doc`, `.xls` and `.ppt` support is listed separately from the modern `.docx`/`.xlsx`/`.pptx` path.

- Environment variables: `OFFICEIMO_MCP_ALLOWED_ROOTS` — keys and tokens: ask the human for the values, never commit them or put them in shared files.

- pull the text out of a PDF report without opening it
- find a message in a PST archive by sender or subject
- turn a Markdown spec into another format
- read a `.docx` file directly in the agent chat
- gather figures from several office files in one request
