## What it does

Octofs is a standalone Rust binary built on `tokio` and `axum`. It equips agents with tools to inspect directory trees while respecting `.gitignore` rules, locate snippets using context-aware search, and read files in chunks. It also handles remote targets directly via `ssh://` URLs.

File modifications rely on composite `N:hh` line identifiers verified against hashes at write time. If external changes occur beforehand, the server rejects outdated edits and suggests relocation offsets. The tool handles atomic batch modifications and stores up to 10 undo steps per file in memory.

Building from source requires Rust 1.95 or later. In practice, you do not need the Rust compiler because pre-compiled binaries and an npm wrapper handle execution automatically.

## Requirements
- Needs: Node.js (commands run via npx)

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI**
```bash
claude mcp add octofs -- npx -y @muvon/octofs
```

### Codex

**Platform CLI**
```bash
codex mcp add octofs -- npx -y @muvon/octofs
```

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "octofs": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "@muvon/octofs"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "octofs": {
            "type": "stdio",
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "@muvon/octofs"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini mcp add octofs npx -y @muvon/octofs
```

## When to use it
- Search codebase text with surrounding context lines
- Modify remote files directly using `ssh://` paths
- Apply atomic multi-line batch edits to a single file
- Block conflicting writes via line-hash validation

## Example prompts
- Find all occurrences of unwrap() in this repository and display their context
- Generate a test.rs file with basic unit tests
- Inspect the directory structure at ssh://user@server:22/var/www
