# npm Trends MCP

Hands your agent npm download history and growth numbers over time. Useful when you pick a library by real usage instead of GitHub stars.

## What it does

Three tools ship with the server. `get_time_series` returns history for one keyword on one source. `get_growth` reports percent change across windows from 7 days to 5 years, several in a single call. `get_top_trends` answers what ranks on a platform right now and takes no keyword at all. Where the pipeline supports it, values are normalized to a 0–100 scale.

The endpoint is `https://npm.api.trendsmcp.ai/mcp` over HTTP. Claude takes `claude mcp add --transport http npm-trends-mcp https://npm.api.trendsmcp.ai/mcp`, Codex takes `codex mcp add npm-trends-mcp --url https://npm.api.trendsmcp.ai/mcp`, Gemini CLI takes `gemini mcp add -t http npm-trends-mcp https://npm.api.trendsmcp.ai/mcp`. Cursor and GitHub Copilot are configured through a JSON block with a `url` field and `http` type.

Grab a free key at trendsmcp.ai; the free tier allows 100 requests per month. Paid calls fail without one, so create the key before wiring anything up. A leftover `YOUR_API_KEY` placeholder in your config is the usual reason calls come back unauthorized — check that first.

## When to use it
- compare download growth of two npm packages over six months
- pick a library by actual adoption rather than star count
- see what currently ranks on the platform
- check whether a package is gaining or losing ground
- drop fresh numbers into a dependency report

## Example prompts
- Using npm Trends MCP, compare download growth for `axios` and `ky` over the last six months
- Show me the weekly download history for `zod` over the past year
- What's trending in npm packages right now?
