## What it does

Part of the `ocean-mcp` project, this tool packages hurricane aerial reconnaissance feeds into an MCP interface. It ships on PyPI under the name `recon-mcp`. An assistant using this server can query high-density flight observations (HDOB), surface wind estimates from SFMR, Vortex Data Messages, and storm center fixes from ATCF.

The underlying weather records are completely open to the public. You do not need tokens or accounts. Running it requires an environment with `uv` or Python installed, because the client executes `uvx recon-mcp` directly.

## Requirements
- Needs: Python and uv (commands run via uvx)

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI**
```bash
claude mcp add recon-mcp -- uvx recon-mcp
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from recon-mcp <command>

### Codex

**Platform CLI**
```bash
codex mcp add noaa-recon-mcp-server -- uvx recon-mcp
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from recon-mcp <command>

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "noaa-recon-mcp-server": {
            "command": "uvx",
            "args": [
                "recon-mcp"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from recon-mcp <command>

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "noaa-recon-mcp-server": {
            "type": "stdio",
            "command": "uvx",
            "args": [
                "recon-mcp"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from recon-mcp <command>

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini mcp add noaa-recon-mcp-server uvx recon-mcp
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from recon-mcp <command>

## When to use it
- Retrieve flight-level HDOB observations from hurricane reconnaissance missions
- Inspect Vortex Data Messages to evaluate cyclone core conditions
- Access stepped-frequency microwave radiometer wind data and ATCF fixes

## Example prompts
- Fetch the latest Vortex Data Messages for the active hurricane
- Display HDOB and SFMR flight readings from the recent recon mission
- Pull recent ATCF storm fixes to track cyclone coordinates
