## What it does

The server exposes tools to import and export memories, check documents, and identify file formats. The mif-tools command-line interface also converts files, such as mem0 exports to MIF or MIF documents to Markdown. MIF has a small set of required fields, with optional data for memory types, tags, and embeddings.

Install the Python package with its `mcp` extra, then run `mif mcp`; Claude Code can connect with `claude mcp add mif-tools -- uvx mif-tools`. Available server tools include `export_memories`, `import_memories`, `validate_memories`, `inspect_memories`, and `list_formats`. Supported formats include mem0, CrewAI, LangChain, generic JSON, and Markdown. Deep validation checks UUIDs, references, timestamps, and embedding dimensions, so use it when those fields matter to your files.

## Requirements
- Needs: Python and uv (commands run via uvx)

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI**
```bash
claude mcp add mif-tools -- uvx mif-tools
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from mif-tools <command>

### Codex

**Platform CLI**
```bash
codex mcp add mif-tools -- uvx mif-tools
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from mif-tools <command>

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "mif-tools": {
            "command": "uvx",
            "args": [
                "mif-tools"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from mif-tools <command>

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "mif-tools": {
            "type": "stdio",
            "command": "uvx",
            "args": [
                "mif-tools"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from mif-tools <command>

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini mcp add mif-tools uvx mif-tools
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from mif-tools <command>

## When to use it
- convert a mem0 export to MIF
- turn a MIF document into Markdown
- check MIF references and timestamps
- identify a memory file's format
- import memories through MCP

## Example prompts
- Convert `mem0_export.json` to MIF and save it as `memories.mif.json`.
- Run deep validation on `memories.mif.json` and show any warnings.
- Import the memories from this file with mif-tools.
