# memoir

An MCP server that stores decisions, goals and next steps in local project files. Switch between tools or machines without losing context.

## What it does

Memoir saves decisions, rationale, goals and check results to your project in `.memoir/` files. These files stay local and do not sync to GitHub. When you return to the project, the agent can recall what has been decided and what was already verified.

Continue a project between Claude Code and Cursor on the same machine: open the same folder and branch, tell the agent to pick up where you left off, and it retrieves the saved context through MCP. You can also create an encrypted backup and restore it on another machine when needed. Node.js 18 or later is required.

Memory runs entirely on your machine. Installing the server through npm does not upload project data anywhere. Use the CLI—`memoir work check`, `memoir work view`, and recovery commands like `memoir work doctor`—to manage what is stored.

## Requirements
- Needs: Node.js (commands run via npx)

```
### Cursor
    }
}
```

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini mcp add memoir npx -y memoir-cli
```

## When to use it
- recall decisions and their reasoning across agent sessions
- hand off project context from Claude Code to Cursor
- restore project memory on a different machine
- track which checks have already been run
- search saved notes and answers

## Example prompts
- Set up memoir so I remember this project next time
- Open this project in Cursor and I'll load the decisions and next steps from here
- Show me what we recorded about recovery codes
