## What it does

mcp-proxmox exposes Proxmox VE controls to an AI assistant. It can inspect cluster nodes, QEMU VMs, and LXC containers, change guest power state, create clones, manage snapshots and backups, browse storage, and inspect network or firewall settings.

The server can run with `uvx mcp-proxmox` or be installed with `pip install mcp-proxmox`. Its connection uses `PROXMOX_HOST`, `PROXMOX_TOKEN_ID`, and `PROXMOX_TOKEN_SECRET`; `PROXMOX_PORT` and `PROXMOX_VERIFY_SSL` are available for the port and SSL check. The Proxmox token needs the permissions required by the operations you want to perform.

\`exec_command` needs `qemu-guest-agent` running inside the guest and works only with QEMU VMs, not LXC containers. Console tools use `VM.Console`; text input follows a US keyboard layout and does not handle Cyrillic characters.

## Requirements
- Needs: Python and uv (commands run via uvx)

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI**
```bash
claude mcp add mcp-proxmox -- uvx mcp-proxmox
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from mcp-proxmox <command>

### Codex

**Platform CLI**
```bash
codex mcp add mcp-proxmox -- uvx mcp-proxmox
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from mcp-proxmox <command>

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "mcp-proxmox": {
            "command": "uvx",
            "args": [
                "mcp-proxmox"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from mcp-proxmox <command>

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "mcp-proxmox": {
            "type": "stdio",
            "command": "uvx",
            "args": [
                "mcp-proxmox"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from mcp-proxmox <command>

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini mcp add mcp-proxmox uvx mcp-proxmox
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from mcp-proxmox <command>

## When to use it
- inspect nodes and guest status
- provision or clone VMs and LXC containers
- create backups and restore guests
- browse storage pools and network interfaces
- run commands inside a QEMU VM

## Example prompts
- Show the Proxmox cluster nodes with their CPU and memory status.
- Create a QEMU VM with the requested CPU, memory, disk, ISO, and network settings.
- Create a snapshot for this VM and list its recent Proxmox tasks.
