## What it does

mcp-cinema4d connects an MCP client to Cinema 4D through a Node.js server and a Python bridge plugin installed inside Cinema 4D. Its typed tool layer lets an agent inspect scene hierarchy, create or edit objects, tags, materials, layers, takes, and render data. It also supports node materials and Xpresso-based rig work.

You need Cinema 4D 2026.0.0+ and Node.js 24+. Install the bridge in Cinema 4D’s plugins directory, launch Cinema 4D, then register the MCP server with `npx`. The bridge does not respond while Cinema 4D is stopped. Arbitrary Python is disabled by default; enabling it requires `C4D_MCP_ENABLE_EXEC_PYTHON=1` on both sides.

Cinema 4D 2026.4 and later includes Maxon’s built-in MCP server. Do not register both servers in one client because their tool sets overlap.

## Requirements
- Needs: Node.js (commands run via npx)

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI**
```bash
claude mcp add mcp-cinema4d -- npx -y @kumoproductions/mcp-cinema4d
```

### Codex

**Platform CLI**
```bash
codex mcp add mcp-cinema4d -- npx -y @kumoproductions/mcp-cinema4d
```

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "mcp-cinema4d": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "@kumoproductions/mcp-cinema4d"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "mcp-cinema4d": {
            "type": "stdio",
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "@kumoproductions/mcp-cinema4d"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini mcp add mcp-cinema4d npx -y @kumoproductions/mcp-cinema4d
```

## When to use it
- audit scene hierarchy and object parameters
- set up a camera, RenderData, and Take
- build a Redshift node material
- adjust Subdivision Surface levels across a scene
- connect gear behavior through an Xpresso graph

## Example prompts
- Connect to Cinema 4D, list objects on the `hero` layer, and flag any with non-uniform scale.
- Create a camera, `RenderData` at 1920×1080, and a `Take` that uses both.
- Build an Xpresso rig for three gears so the driven gears follow the master gear’s size and counter-rotation.
