## What it does

The server brings together tools for rail connections, transfers, addresses, company records, statistics, weather, air quality and geospatial data. An agent can look up stations, check disruption reports, retrieve population figures or search public datasets. Tools are grouped by domain and use prefixes such as `irail_` and `statbel_`.

A catalog layer lets the agent inspect available domains and identify those restricted by a key or an upstream issue. Live STIB/MIVB tools require `STIB_API_KEY`; company registry tools for KBO/BCE require `CBEAPI_KEY`. Without those credentials, those specific live services cannot be used, while other domains marked Live in the domain list need no authentication.

## Requirements
- Needs: Node.js (commands run via npx)
- Environment variables: `STIB_API_KEY`, `CBEAPI_KEY` — keys and tokens: ask the human for the values, never commit them or put them in shared files.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI**
```bash
claude mcp add mcp-belgium -e STIB_API_KEY=<STIB_API_KEY> -e CBEAPI_KEY=<CBEAPI_KEY> -- npx -y mcp-belgium
```
Replace <…> with your own values

### Codex

**Platform CLI**
```bash
codex mcp add mcp-belgium --env STIB_API_KEY=<STIB_API_KEY> --env CBEAPI_KEY=<CBEAPI_KEY> -- npx -y mcp-belgium
```
Replace <…> with your own values

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "mcp-belgium": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "mcp-belgium"
            ],
            "env": {
                "STIB_API_KEY": "<STIB_API_KEY>",
                "CBEAPI_KEY": "<CBEAPI_KEY>"
            }
        }
    }
}
```
Replace <…> with your own values

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
            "type": "stdio",
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "mcp-belgium"
            ],
            "env": {
                "STIB_API_KEY": "<STIB_API_KEY>",
                "CBEAPI_KEY": "<CBEAPI_KEY>"
            }
        }
    }
}
```
Replace <…> with your own values

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini mcp add -e STIB_API_KEY=<STIB_API_KEY> -e CBEAPI_KEY=<CBEAPI_KEY> mcp-belgium npx -y mcp-belgium
```

## When to use it
- find Belgian rail stations and connections
- check train information and disruption reports
- retrieve Statbel figures on population or employment
- look up a Belgian address or municipality
- search open geospatial data for Brussels or Wallonia

## Example prompts
- Find a train from Antwerpen-Centraal to Bruxelles-Midi and check for disruptions.
- Show population figures for a municipality and find the related Statbel dataset.
- Look up a Belgian address and identify its municipality.
