## What it does

The server exposes Mapbox tools over a hosted HTTP endpoint at `https://mcp.mapbox.com/mcp` or runs locally using Node.js via `@mapbox/mcp-server`. It lets your assistant convert street addresses into coordinates and calculate travel directions with live traffic.

Through `render_map_tool`, assistants can display an interactive Mapbox GL JS map with custom GeoJSON directly in supported chat views. Offline spatial calculations like measuring distances and polygon areas run locally without hitting web endpoints.

Every remote query requires this key. Obtain a `MAPBOX_ACCESS_TOKEN` from your Mapbox account before configuring the client.

## Requirements
- Needs: Node.js (commands run via npx)
- Remote server: `https://mcp.mapbox.com/mcp`
- Environment variables: `MAPBOX_ACCESS_TOKEN` — keys and tokens: ask the human for the values, never commit them or put them in shared files.

## When to use it
- calculate travel directions with current traffic delays
- locate points of interest around specific coordinates
- generate isochrone polygons for walking or driving times
- render custom GeoJSON objects on interactive web maps
- match raw GPS points to the actual road grid
