## What it does

The server wraps the lightpaper.org publishing API for your coding agent. Send a document, get two addresses back: a readable one and a permanent path under `https://lightpaper.org/d/...`, along with a score from 0 to 100 split into structure, substance, tone and attribution. The page renders in a browser and produces a preview card when shared on social platforms or in chat apps. Fetch the same URL with `Accept: application/json` and you get the content as data.

It runs as a stdio server through `uvx`, so `uv` has to be present and an API key is required. One Claude setup passes a single variable; a second also sets `LIGHTPAPER_BASE_URL`, which you want when publishing to your own instance rather than the main domain. No `LIGHTPAPER_API_KEY` means no connection to the API, so sort the key out first. Anything scoring under 40 gets `noindex` and stays out of search results, which matters when you push a draft.

Every document sits under a human account, and the platform verifies identity starting with email. How well that identity is confirmed shifts search ranking. A setup tool can walk the agent through the flow, but the OAuth clicks and DNS records still need a person.

## Requirements
- Needs: Python and uv (commands run via uvx)
- Environment variables: `LIGHTPAPER_API_KEY`, `LIGHTPAPER_BASE_URL` — keys and tokens: ask the human for the values, never commit them or put them in shared files.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI**
```bash
claude mcp add --env LIGHTPAPER_API_KEY=<LIGHTPAPER_API_KEY> --env LIGHTPAPER_BASE_URL=<LIGHTPAPER_BASE_URL> --transport stdio lightpaper-mcp -- uvx lightpaper-mcp
```
Replace <…> with your own values. uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from lightpaper-mcp <command>

### Codex

**Platform CLI**
```bash
codex mcp add lightpaper-mcp --env LIGHTPAPER_API_KEY=<LIGHTPAPER_API_KEY> --env LIGHTPAPER_BASE_URL=<LIGHTPAPER_BASE_URL> -- uvx lightpaper-mcp
```
Replace <…> with your own values. uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from lightpaper-mcp <command>

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "lightpaper-mcp": {
            "command": "uvx",
            "args": [
                "lightpaper-mcp"
            ],
            "env": {
                "LIGHTPAPER_API_KEY": "<LIGHTPAPER_API_KEY>",
                "LIGHTPAPER_BASE_URL": "<LIGHTPAPER_BASE_URL>"
            }
        }
    }
}
```
Replace <…> with your own values. uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from lightpaper-mcp <command>

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "lightpaper-mcp": {
            "type": "stdio",
            "command": "uvx",
            "args": [
                "lightpaper-mcp"
            ],
            "env": {
                "LIGHTPAPER_API_KEY": "<LIGHTPAPER_API_KEY>",
                "LIGHTPAPER_BASE_URL": "<LIGHTPAPER_BASE_URL>"
            }
        }
    }
}
```
Replace <…> with your own values. uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from lightpaper-mcp <command>

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini mcp add -e LIGHTPAPER_API_KEY=<LIGHTPAPER_API_KEY> -e LIGHTPAPER_BASE_URL=<LIGHTPAPER_BASE_URL> lightpaper-mcp uvx lightpaper-mcp
```
Replace <…> with your own values. uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from lightpaper-mcp <command>

## When to use it
- publish an agent report as a permanent link instead of a chat attachment
- check a draft's quality score before it goes public
- fetch structured data back from a document URL
- get a preview card for a document on social and in chat apps
- turn a local markdown file into a public page

## Example prompts
- Publish `report.md` to lightpaper and give me the permanent link
- Publish this write-up and tell me what quality score it got
- Use lightpaper-mcp to fetch the permanent URL as JSON
