## What it does

This MCP server links your coding agent to an on-device repository of notes and decisions. It is built specifically for trade-offs and reviews where bad assumptions prove expensive. When evaluating difficult questions, the client calls tools like `calibrate`, `calibrate_review`, `edges`, `search`, and the `memory_*` family to spot discrepancies between model output and your recorded experience.

The service runs locally via a sidecar process. On its initial launch, it pulls down a 40 MB engine alongside an embedding model of roughly 90 MB. No private notes or calibration results leave the host environment.

Running this tool requires macOS on Apple Silicon or Windows x86_64; Linux and Intel Mac hardware are unsupported. You must also have `uv` installed and Python 3 present on your system `PATH`.

## Requirements
- Needs: Python and uv (commands run via uvx)

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI**
```bash
claude mcp add kogcat-mcp -- uvx kogcat-mcp
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from kogcat-mcp <command>

### Codex

**Platform CLI**
```bash
codex mcp add kogcat-mcp -- uvx kogcat-mcp
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from kogcat-mcp <command>

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "kogcat-mcp": {
            "command": "uvx",
            "args": [
                "kogcat-mcp"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from kogcat-mcp <command>

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "kogcat-mcp": {
            "type": "stdio",
            "command": "uvx",
            "args": [
                "kogcat-mcp"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from kogcat-mcp <command>

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini mcp add kogcat-mcp uvx kogcat-mcp
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from kogcat-mcp <command>

## When to use it
- surface blind spots in design tradeoffs using private notes
- retrieve local counterexamples before executing risky architectural changes
- inspect cached memory nodes and relationships during development sessions
- validate strategic technical decisions without cloud data leakage

## Example prompts
- Use KogCat to spot potential blind spots in this database migration plan
- Run a calibration check against my local knowledge base for this design choice
- Consult KogCat to verify if we documented any counterexamples for this pattern
