## What it does

kicad-mcp-server connects an AI client to PCB design work in KiCad 9.x. It runs as an MCP server, giving the agent a route into the project context needed for board design tasks.

The server is launched with `uvx`. In Claude Code, one command adds the MCP server; other supported clients include Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Windsurf (Devin Desktop), Cline, Zed, and Gemini CLI.

Its stated target is KiCad 9.x. Projects built with another KiCad version should be checked before relying on the connection.

## Requirements
- Needs: Python and uv (commands run via uvx)

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI**
```bash
claude mcp add kicad-mcp-server -- uvx kicad-mcp-server
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from kicad-mcp-server <command>

### Codex

**Platform CLI**
```bash
codex mcp add kicad-mcp-server -- uvx kicad-mcp-server
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from kicad-mcp-server <command>

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "kicad-mcp-server": {
            "command": "uvx",
            "args": [
                "kicad-mcp-server"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from kicad-mcp-server <command>

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "kicad-mcp-server": {
            "type": "stdio",
            "command": "uvx",
            "args": [
                "kicad-mcp-server"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from kicad-mcp-server <command>

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini mcp add kicad-mcp-server uvx kicad-mcp-server
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from kicad-mcp-server <command>
