## What it does

jitapi connects an API through its OpenAPI description. It indexes the available endpoints, matches a natural-language request to relevant methods, and uses a dependency graph to find prerequisite calls. The agent receives the required schemas, passes values between steps, and invokes the API through MCP tools.

The server can register an API from a URL, list registered services, search endpoints, inspect endpoint schemas, and run individual calls. Several APIs can be registered together, allowing one service to provide data for a request to another. Local embeddings are used by default; Voyage AI, OpenAI, and Cohere are also supported.

The `claude mcp add` installation command includes `OPENAI_API_KEY`, while the local embedding mode works without an API key. API authentication is configured separately with a bearer token, a custom-header key, or a query-parameter key.

## Requirements
- Needs: Python and uv (commands run via uvx)
- Environment variables: `OPENAI_API_KEY` — keys and tokens: ask the human for the values, never commit them or put them in shared files.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI**
```bash
claude mcp add jitapi -e OPENAI_API_KEY=<OPENAI_API_KEY> -- uvx jitapi
```
Replace <…> with your own values. uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from jitapi <command>

### Codex

**Platform CLI**
```bash
codex mcp add jitapi --env OPENAI_API_KEY=<OPENAI_API_KEY> -- uvx jitapi
```
Replace <…> with your own values. uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from jitapi <command>

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "jitapi": {
            "command": "uvx",
            "args": [
                "jitapi"
            ],
            "env": {
                "OPENAI_API_KEY": "<OPENAI_API_KEY>"
            }
        }
    }
}
```
Replace <…> with your own values. uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from jitapi <command>

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "jitapi": {
            "type": "stdio",
            "command": "uvx",
            "args": [
                "jitapi"
            ],
            "env": {
                "OPENAI_API_KEY": "<OPENAI_API_KEY>"
            }
        }
    }
}
```
Replace <…> with your own values. uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from jitapi <command>

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini mcp add -e OPENAI_API_KEY=<OPENAI_API_KEY> jitapi uvx jitapi
```
Replace <…> with your own values. uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from jitapi <command>

## When to use it
- connect an API from an OpenAPI specification
- find an endpoint from a plain-language request
- resolve prerequisites between API calls
- pass values from one workflow step to another
- configure authentication for a registered API

## Example prompts
- Register the API from this OpenAPI URL in `jitapi`, then show its available endpoints.
- Find the endpoints needed to list my repositories and run the API calls.
- Use the registered APIs together: take the result from the first service and use it in a request to the second.
