# jira-mcp

This MCP server lets an AI client work with Jira issues through natural-language requests, including search, creation, updates, and status changes.

## What it does

jira-mcp connects Jira to an MCP client and exposes issue operations through conversational requests. It can search for issues, create and edit them, move them through workflow states, and manage tickets. The server runs locally, so Jira data is not sent to third-party services.

It relies on `jira-cli`; the provided client setup starts `uvx jira-tools-mcp`. Set `JIRA_API_TOKEN` and `JIRA_AUTH_TYPE` before connecting, then initialize and check the Jira CLI with `jira init` and `jira issue list`. Without those variables, Jira authentication will fail.

## Requirements
- Needs: Python and uv (commands run via uvx)
- Environment variables: `JIRA_API_TOKEN`, `JIRA_AUTH_TYPE` — keys and tokens: ask the human for the values, never commit them or put them in shared files.
- Works with: Jira

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI**
```bash
claude mcp add jira-mcp -e JIRA_API_TOKEN=<JIRA_API_TOKEN> -e JIRA_AUTH_TYPE=<JIRA_AUTH_TYPE> -- uvx jira-tools-mcp
```
Replace <…> with your own values. uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from jira-tools-mcp <command>

### Codex

**Platform CLI**
```bash
codex mcp add jira-mcp --env JIRA_API_TOKEN=<JIRA_API_TOKEN> --env JIRA_AUTH_TYPE=<JIRA_AUTH_TYPE> -- uvx jira-tools-mcp
```
Replace <…> with your own values. uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from jira-tools-mcp <command>

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
                "JIRA_AUTH_TYPE": "<JIRA_AUTH_TYPE>"
            }
        }
    }
}
```
Replace <…> with your own values. uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from jira-tools-mcp <command>

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:

            }
        }
    }
}
```
Replace <…> with your own values. uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from jira-tools-mcp <command>
### Gemini CLI
**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini mcp add -e JIRA_API_TOKEN=<JIRA_API_TOKEN> -e JIRA_AUTH_TYPE=<JIRA_AUTH_TYPE> jira-mcp uvx jira-tools-mcp
