# indexio

indexio indexes Git repositories and gives coding agents tools for code, symbol, and call-graph search. Use it when agents need context across repositories.

## What it does

indexio builds a local index of repositories and exposes it to coding agents through MCP or an HTTP API. The agent can search source code, locate symbols and callers, inspect file sections, and check the likely impact of a symbol or diff.

It runs as a single Rust binary. The index is stored in `~/.indexio`, so no database or external service is involved, and the data directory can be copied to another machine. Run `indexio add ~/code` to register Git repositories under a folder, then connect the server to the client.

\`git` must be available on `PATH` before setup. After registering the server, restart the agent session so it loads the new MCP connection.

## Requirements
- Needs: Node.js (commands run via npx)

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI**
```bash
claude mcp add indexio -- npx -y indexio
```

### Codex

**Platform CLI**
```bash
codex mcp add indexio -- npx -y indexio
```

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "indexio": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "indexio"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "indexio": {
            "type": "stdio",
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "indexio"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini mcp add indexio npx -y indexio
```

## When to use it
- search across indexed repositories
- locate symbol definitions and callers
- inspect a selected file range
- trace the impact of a symbol change
- check indexed repositories and file counts

## Example prompts
- Find every caller of `parse_config` and show the related files.
- Tell me which files may be affected by changing `UserService.create`.
- Search the indexed repositories for TODO items about configuration handling.
