## What it does

This integration connects coding assistants straight into GitHub. It exposes 112 actions covering branch creation, pull requests, issue tracking, and workflow triggers in Actions. Security tooling like Dependabot alerts is also built in.

Token consumption drops sharply with the built-in `compact` mode. It strips unnecessary API metadata, cutting payload volume by 80% to 97%. Commits, repository trees, and discussions reach the model without exhausting its context window.

Running this tool demands Python 3.10 or newer with `uvx`. Authentication works with standard personal access tokens or GitHub App setups, which raise the rate limit to 15,000 requests per hour.

## Requirements
- Needs: Python and uv (commands run via uvx)
- Works with: GitHub

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI**
```bash
claude mcp add github-mcp-server -- uvx github-mcp-server
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from github-mcp-server <command>

### Codex

**Platform CLI**
```bash
codex mcp add github-mcp-server -- uvx github-mcp-server
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from github-mcp-server <command>

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "github-mcp-server": {
            "command": "uvx",
            "args": [
                "github-mcp-server"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from github-mcp-server <command>

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "github-mcp-server": {
            "type": "stdio",
            "command": "uvx",
            "args": [
                "github-mcp-server"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from github-mcp-server <command>

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini mcp add github-mcp-server uvx github-mcp-server
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from github-mcp-server <command>

## When to use it
- trigger and monitor GitHub Actions workflows directly from the prompt
- open pull requests and inspect code changes without switching tools
- fetch issues and repository data using minimal context tokens
- audit Dependabot alerts and secret scanning reports

## Example prompts
- Show me the last three failed GitHub Actions runs in this repo
- Create a new pull request from staging to main describing our recent changes
- List open issues tagged with priority-high using compact format
