## What it does

GitContribute organizes issue research for coding agents. It fetches repository conventions and issue threads, saving everything into a local SQLite store. After syncing, reading this dataset works completely offline. Network calls happen only on explicit command.

The tool spots overlapping work before implementation begins. It flags incomplete data coverage rather than assuming an issue is clear. Candidate patches undergo local verification, comparing baseline metrics against the modified branch once approved.

The server never writes to GitHub. It produces only local drafts for your inspection. Running the tool requires a system `git` binary. GitHub CLI authentication through `gh auth token` is optional.

## Requirements
- Needs: Node.js (commands run via npx)

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI**
```bash
claude mcp add gitcontribute -- npx -y gitcontribute
```

### Codex

**Platform CLI**
```bash
codex mcp add gitcontribute -- npx -y gitcontribute
```

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "gitcontribute": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "gitcontribute"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "gitcontribute": {
            "type": "stdio",
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "gitcontribute"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini mcp add gitcontribute npx -y gitcontribute
```

## When to use it
- filter open issues by contribution scope and maintainer guidance
- detect duplicate bug reports and competing pull requests
- compile research briefs covering relevant code context
- benchmark modified code against the unmodified repository baseline
- draft pull request descriptions locally without pushing to GitHub

## Example prompts
- Search for contribution candidates in owner/repo and exclude items with active pull requests.
- Analyze issue owner/repo#42 for maintainer requirements, linked code, and competing work.
- Compare my test run with the baseline checkout and compile a local pull request draft.
