# Fossick

Fossick lets an AI agent search GitHub, PyPI, and npm for libraries, repositories, and real code usage. Use it when evaluating a dependency or API.

## What it does

Fossick exposes seven read-only tools for code discovery. The server searches GitHub repositories and packages on PyPI and npm, ranks results by relevance, opens a remote repository tree, and reads files without a local clone. It can also locate class, function, and type definitions and search public code for real API usage.

Use it to compare libraries, inspect a dependency before adoption, or trace an unfamiliar project from its repository layout to the relevant source file. It can surface examples from production code and help check recent package activity. Fossick does not handle blame, pull request history, or version diffs; those tasks belong to `git` and `gh`.

Install `uv` first, then run the server through `uvx fossick-mcp`. Without `uv`, the setup command will fail.

## Requirements
- Needs: Python and uv (commands run via uvx)

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI**
```bash
claude mcp add fossick -- uvx fossick-mcp
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from fossick-mcp <command>

### Codex

**Platform CLI**
```bash
codex mcp add fossick -- uvx fossick-mcp
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from fossick-mcp <command>

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "fossick": {
            "command": "uvx",
            "args": [
                "fossick-mcp"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from fossick-mcp <command>

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "fossick": {
            "type": "stdio",
            "command": "uvx",
            "args": [
                "fossick-mcp"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from fossick-mcp <command>

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini mcp add fossick uvx fossick-mcp
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from fossick-mcp <command>

## When to use it
- find a library for a specific task
- check a package before adding it
- inspect a repository without cloning it
- locate real API usage in public code
- compare dependency freshness and activity

## Example prompts
- Find a small Rust terminal UI library and compare it with the common alternatives.
- Show how public FastAPI projects configure structured logging with `structlog`.
- Browse `astral-sh/uv`, locate the definition of the target class, and read its source file.
