## What it does

Exomem exposes an owned Markdown or Obsidian vault as a local knowledge layer for MCP-capable agents. It supports file search, note retrieval, and checks that attach knowledge to sources and history; the description also lists hybrid search. Your files stay local, editable, and portable.

The package requires `Python >=3.11`, and `uvx` can launch it without a separate server setup. Running `exomem setup` scans the vault, creates `Knowledge Base/`, performs a preflight check, and registers the server with detected clients. Existing notes are left alone because Exomem writes under `Knowledge Base/`.

## Requirements
- Needs: Python and uv (commands run via uvx)

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI**
```bash
claude mcp add exomem -- uvx exomem
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from exomem <command>

### Codex

**Platform CLI**
```bash
codex mcp add exomem -- uvx exomem
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from exomem <command>

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "exomem": {
            "command": "uvx",
            "args": [
                "exomem"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from exomem <command>

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "exomem": {
            "type": "stdio",
            "command": "uvx",
            "args": [
                "exomem"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from exomem <command>

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini mcp add exomem uvx exomem
```
uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from exomem <command>

## When to use it
- search project knowledge stored in local notes
- retrieve a note from an Obsidian vault
- check knowledge before an agent answers
- connect a Markdown vault to an MCP client

## Example prompts
- Search the vault for database migration notes and show their sources.
- Retrieve the current release plan and check where the information came from.
- Run a knowledge-base check before answering this question.
