## What it does

The server exposes 50 utilities namespaced with the `fc_` prefix over standard stdio transport. Beyond simple file edits, it manages operating system processes, runs interactive shell or Python REPL sessions, and handles text searches across explicit file lists without unexpected glob expansions.

File deletion defaults to the platform recycle bin or trash folder to prevent accidental data loss. When dealing with cloud sync drives such as OneDrive or Dropbox, the server detects sync locks and falls back to a copy-then-delete routine. It also handles ZIP archives, data format conversions across JSON, YAML, XML, or TOML, and checksum generation up to SHA-512.

Running this server requires Node.js 20 or newer on your machine. Optical character recognition features depend on an optional `tesseract.js` installation.

## Requirements
- Needs: Node.js (commands run via npx)

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI**
```bash
claude mcp add ellmos-filecommander-mcp -- npx -y ellmos-filecommander-mcp
```

### Codex

**Platform CLI**
```bash
codex mcp add ellmos-filecommander -- npx -y ellmos-filecommander-mcp
```

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "ellmos-filecommander": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "ellmos-filecommander-mcp"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "ellmos-filecommander": {
            "type": "stdio",
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "ellmos-filecommander-mcp"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini mcp add ellmos-filecommander npx -y ellmos-filecommander-mcp
```

## When to use it
- send deleted files to the system trash instead of wiping them permanently
- manage local background processes and interactive REPL environments
- search literal text across an explicit file list without recursive globs
- convert structured data between JSON, YAML, TOML, XML, and CSV

## Example prompts
- Search for the string "DATABASE_URL" across the files listed in targets.txt
- Start a Node.js REPL session and inspect process.env values
- Safely move the unused builds folder to the system recycle bin
