# Elicitly

A local MCP server that lets an agent ask the human: a confirmation, a form built from your JSON schema, an inline template. It also checks host support.

## What it does

Elicitly runs as a stdio MCP server via `npx -y elicitly`. It exposes four tools: `elicit_confirm` for a yes/no question, `elicit_form` for a form driven by a JSON schema you supply, `elicit_display` for rendering a LiquidJS template inline, and `elicit_doctor` for diagnostics.

Elicitation already exists in MCP, yet hosts vary in how much of it they implement, and only a server can fire it. Standing up a server just to ask one question is a waste. That is the gap this fills. The companion package `@elicitly/tools` registers the same tools on an `McpServer` you already run. What `elicit_doctor` reports feeds a public support matrix.

This repo is the Free Edition, Apache-2.0. Hosted pieces — review pages, an audit trail, organization dashboards — sit in the Pro Edition at elicitly.ai. For a local back-and-forth with a person, the free half is enough. Claude Desktop users can grab `elicitly.mcpb` from the latest release and open it.

## Requirements
- Needs: Node.js (commands run via npx)

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI**
```bash
claude mcp add elicitly -- npx -y elicitly
```

### Codex

**Platform CLI**
```bash
codex mcp add elicitly -- npx -y elicitly
```

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "elicitly": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "elicitly"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:

            "args": [
                "-y",
                "elicitly"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```
### Gemini CLI
**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini mcp add elicitly npx -y elicitly
```
## When to use it
- get a human to approve an irreversible step
- collect input through a form defined by your own JSON schema
- render a LiquidJS template inside the agent's reply
- find out whether a given host handles elicitation
- add elicitation tools to an MCP server you already have
## Example prompts
- Call `elicit_confirm` and ask whether to ship the build
- Build a form with `elicit_form` from the schema in `schema.json`
- Run `elicit_doctor` and tell me if this host supports elicitation
