## What it does

The server acts as a local API reference layer built on NestJS and TypeScript. Instead of making slow web requests or guessing syntax, the assistant queries DevDocs.io archives stored on disk. It relies on `sql.js` for metadata indexing, which avoids native C++ compilation steps entirely.

Documentation datasets stay mapped to dependencies declared in your `package.json`. An agent fetches and stores these datasets locally using the `ingest` tool. Without running this ingestion step first, the server cannot supply offline context for that specific library. You can run the process via Node.js or Docker.

## Requirements
- Needs: Node.js (commands run via npx)

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI**
```bash
claude mcp add devdocs-mcp -- npx -y @madhan-g-p/devdocs-mcp-server
```

### Codex

**Platform CLI**
```bash
codex mcp add devdocs-mcp -- npx -y @madhan-g-p/devdocs-mcp-server
```

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "devdocs-mcp": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "@madhan-g-p/devdocs-mcp-server"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "devdocs-mcp": {
            "type": "stdio",
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "@madhan-g-p/devdocs-mcp-server"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini mcp add devdocs-mcp npx -y @madhan-g-p/devdocs-mcp-server
```

## When to use it
- supply exact API definitions matched to `package.json` versions
- retrieve reference documentation without an active internet connection
- prevent obsolete syntax and agent hallucinations in library calls

## Example prompts
- Ingest documentation for react 18.2.0 and typescript 5.0.0 into DevDocs
- Look up the IntersectionObserver constructor in local DevDocs
- Check the signature for this library method using devdocs-mcp
