# depwire

Builds a dependency graph of your project and hands it to the AI assistant through 24 MCP tools. Useful when the agent edits code without seeing who else imports the file.

## What it does

Depwire parses source with tree-sitter and builds a deterministic graph of symbol-level relationships. No embeddings, no similarity search: edges come from parsing, and anything the parser cannot resolve is recorded as unresolved instead of guessed. It covers 16 languages plus Angular templates.

On top of the graph sit 24 MCP tools: impact analysis, What If simulation, graph-aware security scanning, blast radius analysis and a structural diff between commits. There is a dependency scanner and a pre-action check as well. The assistant gets an answer to "what breaks if I delete this" before it deletes anything.

The CLI runs locally and collects no usage telemetry — source code, file names and graph data stay on your machine. Some operations do reach out, though: security scans contact package registries and public advisory databases by default, `connect_repo` accesses GitHub when given a GitHub URL, and the What If browser page pulls D3 from a CDN. Worth knowing if you work behind a closed network.

## Requirements
- Needs: Node.js (commands run via npx)

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI**
```bash
claude mcp add depwire -- npx -y depwire-cli
```

### Codex

**Platform CLI**
```bash
codex mcp add depwire -- npx -y depwire-cli
```

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "depwire": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "depwire-cli"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "depwire": {
            "type": "stdio",
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "depwire-cli"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini mcp add depwire npx -y depwire-cli
```

## When to use it
- find which files break when a utility is deleted
- check the impact of an edit before applying it
- trace import chains between symbols
- run a vulnerability scan that respects project structure
- compare graph structure across two commits

## Example prompts
- Show me what depends on `src/utils/format.ts` before I delete it
- Simulate a change in `api/client.ts` and list the affected modules
- Run a security scan over the project dependency graph
