## What it does

\`code-index` parses source files into an AST, stores symbols, function bodies, calls, and metadata in SQLite, then exposes the index through MCP. It is written in Rust, handles AST data for 14 languages, and includes native support for 1C:Enterprise 8.3 exports from both Configurator and 1C:EDT.

The npm route uses `@regsorm/code-index-mcp`; its postinstall step fetches a ready binary for the current platform. The server can use HTTP or `stdio`. In either mode, a separate `npx @regsorm/code-index-mcp daemon run` process builds the index while the MCP server reads it.

Set `CODE_INDEX_HOME` before using the npm setup. Without the background indexer, tools return `daemon_offline`. The server can connect to Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Windsurf (Devin Desktop), Cline, and Zed.

## Requirements
- Needs: Node.js (commands run via npx)

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI**
```bash
claude mcp add code-index -- npx -y @regsorm/code-index-mcp
```

### Codex

**Platform CLI**
```bash
codex mcp add code-index -- npx -y @regsorm/code-index-mcp
```

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "code-index": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "@regsorm/code-index-mcp"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "code-index": {
            "type": "stdio",
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "@regsorm/code-index-mcp"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini mcp add code-index npx -y @regsorm/code-index-mcp
```

## When to use it
- find symbol definitions across a repository
- trace calls to a procedure or function
- inspect source structure through an AST
- search project code through MCP
- analyze 1C:Enterprise 8.3 exports

## Example prompts
- Index this repository and find every call to `UpdateData`.
- Show the definition of `UserService` and the code locations that use it.
- Inspect the 1C modules and map the dependencies between them.
