# CiteStamp

Verifies academic citations across scholarly registries and flags retracted papers directly in agent chats.

- MCP server · `type=mcp` · Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Windsurf (Devin Desktop), Cline, Zed, Gemini CLI
- Author: citestamp
- License: MIT · policy=link-only · description only; the file stays with the author

## What it does

The server is hosted remotely over HTTP. Nothing runs locally. It queries Crossref, DataCite, and doi.org before your agent prints a bibliography. This stops made-up sources from slipping into generated summaries.

Tools include `check_reference` for resolving DOIs and arXiv identifiers, `retraction_listing` for Retraction Watch notices, and edge lookups like `what_supports` or `what_refutes`. Data records separate machine inferences from entries signed by ORCID holders.

Anonymous access allows 10 requests each minute per IP. A malformed token triggers an immediate HTTP 401 error rather than a silent fallback, so add the authorization header only when a valid key is ready.

## Requirements
- Remote server: `https://mcp.citestamp.com/mcp`

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI: remote server**
```bash
claude mcp add --transport http citestamp https://mcp.citestamp.com/mcp
```

### Codex

**Platform CLI: remote server**
```bash
codex mcp add citestamp --url https://mcp.citestamp.com/mcp
```

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "citestamp": {
            "url": "https://mcp.citestamp.com/mcp"
        }
    }
}
```

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "citestamp": {
            "type": "http",
            "url": "https://mcp.citestamp.com/mcp"
        }
    }
}
```

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI: remote server**
```bash
gemini mcp add -t http citestamp https://mcp.citestamp.com/mcp
```

## When to use it
- verify whether a DOI or arXiv identifier resolves to a real paper
- check if a study appears in Retraction Watch records
- retrieve papers supporting or contesting a specific claim
- prevent hallucinated citations in generated research summaries

## Example prompts
- Check this DOI using CiteStamp before adding it to the reference list.
- Use retraction_listing to see if the cited paper has been pulled.
- Find papers that support or refute this argument with what_supports.
