# Awareness Local

A local MCP server keeps decisions and project context across AI coding sessions. Use it for migrations, handoffs, and workflows that span multiple sessions.

## What it does

Awareness Local gives an AI coding agent persistent memory between sessions. It writes decisions, discovered solutions, pending work, and implementation constraints to Markdown files under `.awareness/`, then retrieves relevant context with a mix of keyword and semantic search.

A local daemon handles the memory flow. Its index uses SQLite FTS5 and embeddings, while retrieval runs without LLM calls. Local mode works offline and does not require a cloud account. The server is launched through `npx`, so setup starts with an MCP registration command.

The local daemon is part of the runtime: it stores the memory on your machine and exposes tools for recording, recalling, and initializing sessions.

## Requirements
- Needs: Node.js (commands run via npx)

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI**
```bash
claude mcp add awareness-local -- npx -y @awareness.market/local
```

### Codex

**Platform CLI**
```bash
codex mcp add awareness-local -- npx -y @awareness.market/local
```

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "awareness-local": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "@awareness.market/local"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "awareness-local": {
            "type": "stdio",
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "@awareness.market/local"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini mcp add awareness-local npx -y @awareness.market/local
```

## When to use it
- carry architecture decisions across agent sessions
- resume a codebase migration with prior context
- share implementation history during team handoffs
- retain coding preferences and project conventions

## Example prompts
- Save the current architecture decision to project memory and explain its rationale.
- Search memory for earlier decisions about this migration before changing the code.
- Initialize this session and bring back pending tasks and project constraints.
