## What it does

Automox MCP Server connects an AI assistant with an Automox environment. It can inspect devices, check compliance, run policies, and work with patch operations through conversational requests.

The self-hosted server runs with `uvx automox-mcp`. Its setup requires `AUTOMOX_API_KEY` and `AUTOMOX_ACCOUNT_UUID`; adding `AUTOMOX_ORG_ID` is recommended for organization context. The server can be used with Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI, and the other listed MCP clients.

An organization-scoped key is the safer choice for search tools: a global key can produce `403` in some organizations even when other reads work. A hosted option is available at `https://console.automox.com/api/mcp`, while the local setup remains available for clients using a local MCP process.

## Requirements
- Needs: Python and uv (commands run via uvx)
- Environment variables: `AUTOMOX_API_KEY`, `AUTOMOX_ACCOUNT_UUID`, `AUTOMOX_ORG_ID` — keys and tokens: ask the human for the values, never commit them or put them in shared files.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI**
```bash
claude mcp add --env AUTOMOX_API_KEY=<AUTOMOX_API_KEY> --env AUTOMOX_ACCOUNT_UUID=<AUTOMOX_ACCOUNT_UUID> --env AUTOMOX_ORG_ID=<AUTOMOX_ORG_ID> --transport stdio automox-mcp-server -- uvx automox-mcp
```
Replace <…> with your own values. uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from automox-mcp <command>

### Codex

**Platform CLI**
```bash
codex mcp add automox-mcp-server --env AUTOMOX_API_KEY=<AUTOMOX_API_KEY> --env AUTOMOX_ACCOUNT_UUID=<AUTOMOX_ACCOUNT_UUID> --env AUTOMOX_ORG_ID=<AUTOMOX_ORG_ID> -- uvx automox-mcp
```
Replace <…> with your own values. uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from automox-mcp <command>

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "automox-mcp-server": {
            "command": "uvx",
            "args": [
                "automox-mcp"
            ],
            "env": {
                "AUTOMOX_API_KEY": "<AUTOMOX_API_KEY>",
                "AUTOMOX_ACCOUNT_UUID": "<AUTOMOX_ACCOUNT_UUID>",
                "AUTOMOX_ORG_ID": "<AUTOMOX_ORG_ID>"
            }
        }
    }
}
```
Replace <…> with your own values. uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from automox-mcp <command>

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "automox-mcp-server": {
            "type": "stdio",
            "command": "uvx",
            "args": [
                "automox-mcp"
            ],
            "env": {
                "AUTOMOX_API_KEY": "<AUTOMOX_API_KEY>",
                "AUTOMOX_ACCOUNT_UUID": "<AUTOMOX_ACCOUNT_UUID>",
                "AUTOMOX_ORG_ID": "<AUTOMOX_ORG_ID>"
            }
        }
    }
}
```
Replace <…> with your own values. uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from automox-mcp <command>

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini mcp add -e AUTOMOX_API_KEY=<AUTOMOX_API_KEY> -e AUTOMOX_ACCOUNT_UUID=<AUTOMOX_ACCOUNT_UUID> -e AUTOMOX_ORG_ID=<AUTOMOX_ORG_ID> automox-mcp-server uvx automox-mcp
```
Replace <…> with your own values. uvx runs the command named after the package; if the README names another one, use uvx --from automox-mcp <command>

## When to use it
- manage Automox devices from an AI chat
- check patch readiness across an organization
- run Automox policies from a prompt
- inspect compliance and pending actions

## Example prompts
- Check which Automox devices need patches.
- Show the current compliance state and pending actions.
