# audrey

## What it does

Audrey maintains project context across independent agent sessions. When a new run opens, it injects a concise briefing with known project rules and recent hazards. During user prompts, durable instructions like "remember that" turn into persistent records.

The core mechanism is the Guard pre-action check. Before an agent executes a shell command or edits files, Audrey evaluates the fingerprint against recorded historical failures. If an identical command failed previously, Guard blocks execution with evidence. Meanwhile, benign inspection commands such as `grep`, `git status`, or `cat` pass through silently without triggering false alerts.

Runtime requirements are strict: Node.js 22.16+ or 24+ is mandatory because storage relies on Node's built-in SQLite engine. By default, hook timeouts or internal errors fail open so sessions do not freeze, but setting `AUDREY_HOOK_FAIL_CLOSED=1` enforces strict blocking instead.

## Requirements
- Needs: Node.js (commands run via npx)
- Environment variables: `AUDREY_DATA_DIR`, `AUDREY_AGENT` — keys and tokens: ask the human for the values, never commit them or put them in shared files.

## When to use it
- prevent agents from running previously failed build or deploy scripts
- retain repository conventions across brand-new agent sessions
- block accidental commits of generated files before actions execute
- filter out harmless read-only terminal commands from error tracking

## Example prompts
