# Audio File MCP App

Inspect local audio in an agent window with playback, metadata, loudness readings, and a spectrogram. Useful when you want to discuss a specific part of a recording.

## What it does

Ask the host to open a local audio file by its absolute path. The app displays playback controls, a waveform, metadata, and a spectrogram; it also shares the playhead position and selected region with the model. Loudness readings include EBU R128 measures such as LUFS, LRA, and True Peak.

You can add labelled annotation lanes to mark events or show analysis intervals. Provide the data through `annotations`, or point to a JSON file with `annotationsPath`. The server runs locally over stdio and can open audio files accessible to the user account. That means an agent with tool access can open recordings on your machine, so host approval settings matter.

For Claude Code, add the server with `claude mcp add audio-file-mcp-app -- npx -y @counterpoint-studio/audio-file-mcp-app`. It launches the package through `npx`.

## Requirements
- Needs: Node.js (commands run via npx)

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI**
```bash
claude mcp add audio-file-mcp-app -- npx -y @counterpoint-studio/audio-file-mcp-app
```

### Codex

**Platform CLI**
```bash
codex mcp add audio-file-mcp-app -- npx -y @counterpoint-studio/audio-file-mcp-app
```

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "audio-file-mcp-app": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "@counterpoint-studio/audio-file-mcp-app"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "audio-file-mcp-app": {
            "type": "stdio",
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "@counterpoint-studio/audio-file-mcp-app"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini mcp add audio-file-mcp-app npx -y @counterpoint-studio/audio-file-mcp-app
```

## When to use it
- play a local audio file inside an agent host
- inspect a recording’s EBU R128 loudness readings
- view frequency content in a spectrogram
- mark events and intervals on an audio timeline

## Example prompts
- Open `/Users/me/Music/track.wav` so I can listen and inspect its spectrogram.
- Check the loudness of `/Users/me/Music/track.wav` and mark the audible events on its timeline.
