# ~Alter Identity

\~Alter Identity connects an AI agent to the ~Alter protocol. Its handle can associate the agent’s actions with an identity record.

## What it does

\~Alter Identity connects Claude Code and other supported environments to the ~Alter protocol over MCP. In that protocol, a handle such as `~yourname` points to a record of activity; agents acting under the handle are associated with it. Anyone can check whether a handle exists for free.

The CLI’s registration flow uses `alter register` and asks the user to confirm they are eighteen or older. The project also describes reviewing queries and controlling access to the record. Those are CLI and protocol features; the available MCP tools aren’t listed in the description. Claude Code connects to the remote HTTP endpoint, so the MCP setup command itself doesn’t require installing the CLI locally.

## Requirements
- Remote server: `https://mcp.truealter.com/api/v1/mcp`

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI: remote server**
```bash
claude mcp add --transport http identity https://mcp.truealter.com/api/v1/mcp
```

### Codex

**Platform CLI: remote server**
```bash
codex mcp add alter-identity --url https://mcp.truealter.com/api/v1/mcp
```

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "alter-identity": {
            "url": "https://mcp.truealter.com/api/v1/mcp"
        }
    }
}
```

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "alter-identity": {
            "type": "http",
            "url": "https://mcp.truealter.com/api/v1/mcp"
        }
    }
}
```

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI: remote server**
```bash
gemini mcp add -t http alter-identity https://mcp.truealter.com/api/v1/mcp
```

## When to use it
- connect Claude Code to the ~Alter protocol
- associate an agent’s actions with a `~yourname` handle
- check whether a handle exists
- review who queried an identity record

## Example prompts
- Help me connect to ~Alter and explain how to create a handle.
- Check whether the handle `~yourname` exists.
- Explain how to associate my agent’s actions with my ~Alter identity.
