# aieph

A shared cache that answers an AI assistant's web lookup before it happens. On a miss the original search runs untouched.

## What it does

aieph sits in front of web search. A hook asks the shared cache whether the answer already exists, and hands it back if it does. A miss, a timeout or an error changes nothing — the lookup proceeds the way it always would.

On Claude the wiring is one `PreToolUse` hook matching `WebSearch|WebFetch` in `~/.claude/settings.json`, running `node /path/to/aieph/hook/aieph-cache.mjs`. Node.js 18+ is required. There is no signup and no API key. Two environment variables are optional: `AIEPH_API_BASE` and `LOOKUP_TIMEOUT_MS`. To undo it, drop the `PreToolUse` block.

Only the query text leaves your machine. The cache is young, so plenty of lookups will miss, and a miss is meant to feel like no cache at all. A separate local-only memory CLI lives in `cli/` and never leaves the machine.

## Requirements
- Remote server: `https://aieph.dev/mcp`

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI: remote server**
```bash
claude mcp add --transport http aieph https://aieph.dev/mcp
```

### Codex

**Platform CLI: remote server**
```bash
codex mcp add aieph --url https://aieph.dev/mcp
```

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "aieph": {
            "url": "https://aieph.dev/mcp"
        }
    }
}
```

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "aieph": {
            "type": "http",
            "url": "https://aieph.dev/mcp"
        }
    }
}
```

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI: remote server**
```bash
gemini mcp add -t http aieph https://aieph.dev/mcp
```

## When to use it
- stop re-searching the same error message
- reuse an answer about a library's behaviour
- cut down web lookups while debugging
- keep a project fact in local memory across sessions
- revert to the plain setup by deleting one block

## Example prompts
- Wire the aieph hook for WebSearch into `~/.claude/settings.json`
- Check whether the aieph cache has anything on this build error
- Save to aieph local memory that the project builds with `pnpm`
