## What it does

The server exposes repository Architecture Decision Records directly to coding assistants via stdio. It parses Markdown files equipped with YAML frontmatter from a directory like `docs/adr`. Crucially, it surfaces superseded or discarded decisions, stopping models from pitching architectures your team already dismissed.

Operation is entirely local. The toolset contains four read-only actions, including `search_decisions` with filters for tags, status, and scope. There are no outbound network calls, no background LLM requests, and no write operations back into the repository.

Node 22 or higher is required. Without a readable `.git` path at the root, the process exits with a non-zero status immediately.

## Requirements
- Needs: Node.js (commands run via npx)
- Environment variables: `ADRKIT_MCP_CWD`, `ADRKIT_MCP_DIR` — keys and tokens: ask the human for the values, never commit them or put them in shared files.

## When to use it
- retrieve historical decisions before refactoring code
- filter active architectural records by tags and scope
- surface rejected technical proposals to prevent redundant work
