## What it does

3DOptix exposes the 3DOptix cloud platform to your agent over MCP. It can lay out an optical setup, position lenses and detectors, define light sources, run a GPU ray-trace simulation, and pull up the analysis afterwards. Zemax files and CAD models come in through the same server.

Two skills ship alongside the tools. `3doptix-workflow` covers the actual process: creating a setup, placing and aligning components, picking optics from the catalog or defining custom ones, then optimising. `3doptix-setup` fires when the connection breaks and walks through verifying the server.

You need a 3DOptix account. Signing up gives a fully functional trial; keeping it going past that requires a subscription. Login is OAuth 2.0 with dynamic client registration, so there is no key to copy anywhere. In Claude Code, run `/mcp`, pick 3doptix, and finish signing in through the browser. Nothing gets compiled on install: skills are Markdown and the manifests are JSON, so the installed tree matches the repository exactly.

## Requirements
- Remote server: `https://mcp.3doptix.com`

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

**Platform CLI: remote server**
```bash
claude mcp add --transport http optical-design https://mcp.3doptix.com
```

### Codex

**Platform CLI: remote server**
```bash
codex mcp add 3doptix --url https://mcp.3doptix.com
```

### Cursor

**Config file**
File `.cursor/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "3doptix": {
            "url": "https://mcp.3doptix.com"
        }
    }
}
```

### GitHub Copilot

**Config file**
File `.vscode/mcp.json`:
```json
{
    "servers": {
        "3doptix": {
            "type": "http",
            "url": "https://mcp.3doptix.com"
        }
    }
}
```

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI: remote server**
```bash
gemini mcp add -t http 3doptix https://mcp.3doptix.com
```

## When to use it
- build a lens-and-detector layout from inside the chat
- run a ray trace and inspect the spot diagram
- bring a Zemax project over and locate the worst aberrations
- pick catalog optics that fit a given beam
- upload a CAD model and fit it into the setup

## Example prompts
- Import my Zemax file into 3DOptix and tell me where the aberrations are worst.
- Check the 3doptix connection and list my setups.
