## What it does

The command reads git commit history from the last three months, sees who touched what, and lines that up against the project stack. You get a competency matrix per person, a list of critical gaps, and a read on how concentrated knowledge is. It also estimates bus factor: if only one person is active on a technology, that is worth checking before their vacation.

Four modes run through an argument: `--skill-matrix`, `--knowledge-gaps`, `--expertise-areas`, `--learning-paths`. The first builds the matrix, the second hunts for holes, the third breaks down who owns what, the fourth proposes training and mentorship. There is also a cross-training block: who to pair with whom so knowledge does not sit with one person.

The command uses `Read`, `Bash`, `Glob` and `Grep`, so it needs access to a repository with git history. No commits means nothing to analyze. Output is a text report, not charts, so you build the visuals yourself.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **claude-code-templates**
```bash
npx claude-code-templates@latest --command team/team-knowledge-mapper
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/commands/team-knowledge-mapper.md` — Call it with /team-knowledge-mapper. For all projects use ~/.claude/commands/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.codex/prompts/team-knowledge-mapper.md` — Call it with /prompts:team-knowledge-mapper. Codex marks this format deprecated in favour of skills

### GitHub Copilot

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/prompts/team-knowledge-mapper.prompt.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.gemini/commands/team-knowledge-mapper.toml` — Gemini stores commands as TOML: the prompt text goes into the prompt field

## When to use it
- build a skill matrix for team members
- spot critical competency gaps before hiring
- estimate bus factor on key technologies
- draft a training and mentorship plan
- plan cross-training and knowledge rotation

## Example prompts
- /team-knowledge-mapper --skill-matrix
- /team-knowledge-mapper --knowledge-gaps
- /team-knowledge-mapper --learning-paths

# Team Knowledge Mapper

Map team knowledge and expertise with comprehensive skill gap analysis: **$ARGUMENTS**

## Current Knowledge Context

- Team expertise: !`git log --format='%ae' --since='3 months ago' | sort | uniq -c | sort -nr` contributor activity patterns
- Technology stack: Analysis of languages, frameworks, and tools used in codebase
- Knowledge distribution: Assessment of expertise concentration and bus factor risks
- Learning activity: Recent skill development and cross-training initiatives

## Task

Execute comprehensive knowledge mapping with skill gap analysis and learning optimization:

**Mapping Type**: Use $ARGUMENTS to focus on skill matrix creation, knowledge gap identification, expertise area analysis, or learning path recommendations

**Knowledge Mapping Framework**:
1. **Skill Matrix Creation** - Map individual expertise levels, identify core competencies, assess technology proficiencies, evaluate domain knowledge
2. **Knowledge Gap Analysis** - Identify critical skill gaps, assess team vulnerabilities, evaluate learning priorities, recommend skill development
3. **Expertise Distribution** - Analyze knowledge concentration, identify single points of failure, assess bus factor risks, recommend knowledge sharing
4. **Learning Path Planning** - Design skill development roadmaps, recommend training priorities, plan mentorship programs, optimize knowledge transfer
5. **Cross-Training Optimization** - Identify pairing opportunities, plan knowledge rotation, design shadowing programs, optimize skill redundancy
6. **Knowledge Retention** - Assess knowledge preservation, plan documentation strategies, design knowledge capture systems, prevent expertise loss

**Advanced Features**: Dynamic skill tracking, expertise prediction modeling, learning ROI analysis, knowledge graph visualization, competency gap forecasting.

**Strategic Planning**: Succession planning support, hiring decision guidance, team composition optimization, skill portfolio balancing.

**Output**: Comprehensive knowledge map with skill matrices, gap analysis, learning recommendations, and strategic knowledge management plans.
