## What it does

The command inspects your repository using `Read`, `Bash`, `Grep`, and `Glob` tools. It checks commit counts with `git log`, ranks contributors via `git shortlog`, and scans dependency files like `package.json`, `requirements.txt`, or `Cargo.toml`.

The resulting markdown document breaks down code quality, delivery metrics, team work distribution, and outdated packages. Security checks trigger `npm audit` or equivalent tooling. If your git history has fewer than 30 revisions, the diff inspection fails with a fallback warning, so the command needs an established repository to produce meaningful output.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **claude-code-templates**
```bash
npx claude-code-templates@latest --command project-management/project-health-check
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/commands/project-health-check.md` — Call it with /project-health-check. For all projects use ~/.claude/commands/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.codex/prompts/project-health-check.md` — Call it with /prompts:project-health-check. Codex marks this format deprecated in favour of skills

### GitHub Copilot

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/prompts/project-health-check.prompt.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.gemini/commands/project-health-check.toml` — Gemini stores commands as TOML: the prompt text goes into the prompt field

## When to use it
- calculate a health score from 0 to 100 for your repository
- track contributor distribution and commit frequency over time
- scan dependencies for outdated packages and vulnerabilities
- generate structured markdown metrics tables for sprint reviews

## Example prompts
- /project-health-check --30-days
- /project-health-check --sprint
- /project-health-check --quarter

# Project Health Check

Analyze overall project health and metrics: **$ARGUMENTS**

## Current Project State

- Git activity: !`git log --oneline --since="30 days ago" | wc -l`
- Contributors: !`git shortlog -sn --since="30 days ago" | head -5`
- Branch status: !`git branch -r | wc -l` remote branches
- Code changes: !`git diff --stat HEAD~30 2>/dev/null || echo "Not enough history"`
- Dependencies: @package.json or @requirements.txt or @Cargo.toml (if exists)

## Task

Generate a comprehensive project health report analyzing:

**Evaluation Period**: Use $ARGUMENTS or default to last 30 days

**Health Dimensions**:
1. **Code Quality Metrics**
   - Test coverage and trends
   - Code complexity analysis
   - Security vulnerabilities (run npm audit or equivalent)
   - Technical debt indicators

2. **Delivery Performance**
   - Sprint velocity trends (if task management tools available)
   - Cycle time analysis
   - Bug vs feature ratio
   - On-time delivery metrics

3. **Team Health Indicators**
   - PR review turnaround time
   - Commit frequency distribution
   - Work distribution balance
   - Knowledge concentration risk

4. **Dependency Health**
   - Outdated packages assessment
   - Security audit results
   - License compliance check
   - External service dependencies

**Health Report Format**:
- Overall health score (0-100) with color-coded status
- Executive summary with key findings
- Detailed metrics tables with current vs target values
- Trend analysis and risk assessment
- Actionable recommendations prioritized by impact

**Output**: Generate markdown report with charts, metrics tables, and specific action items for improving project health.
