## What it does

The command checks the PAC setup in `.pac/`, derives an epic ID from its name, and writes a YAML file under `.pac/epics/`. The specification covers the description, scope, success criteria, constraints, and dependencies. It also records the required metadata: ID, name, creation timestamp, and owner. If details are missing, the command asks the user for them.

It creates an epic directory, updates `.pac/index.yaml` when that file exists, and creates a `pac/[epic-id]` branch inside a Git repository. PAC must be configured first; if the setup is missing, the command suggests `/project:pac-configure`. You can then add tickets with `/project:pac-create-ticket --epic [epic-id]`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **claude-code-templates**
```bash
npx claude-code-templates@latest --command project-management/pac-create-epic
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/commands/pac-create-epic.md` — Call it with /pac-create-epic. For all projects use ~/.claude/commands/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.codex/prompts/pac-create-epic.md` — Call it with /prompts:pac-create-epic. Codex marks this format deprecated in favour of skills

### GitHub Copilot

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/prompts/pac-create-epic.prompt.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.gemini/commands/pac-create-epic.toml` — Gemini stores commands as TOML: the prompt text goes into the prompt field

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/davila7/claude-code-templates/tree/HEAD/cli-tool/components/commands/project-management/pac-create-epic.md

## When to use it
- create a PAC epic with a YAML specification
- set an epic’s owner, description, and scope
- record success criteria, constraints, and dependencies
- prepare the epic directory and update the PAC index
- create a Git branch for an epic

## Example prompts
- Create a `checkout-redesign` epic for the checkout rewrite and assign it to `alex`.
- Set up an `api-v2` epic covering the new API version and migration scope.
- Create a `search-filters` epic and ask me for its success criteria and dependencies.

# Create PAC Epic

Create a new epic following the Product as Code specification with guided workflow: **$ARGUMENTS**

## PAC Configuration Check

- PAC directory: !`ls -la .pac/ 2>/dev/null || echo "No .pac directory found"`
- PAC config: @.pac/pac.config.yaml (if exists)
- Existing epics: !`ls -la .pac/epics/ 2>/dev/null | head -10`

## Task

Create a new Product as Code epic:

**Arguments**:
- Epic name (required if not using --name flag)
- --name <name>: Epic name
- --description <desc>: Epic description
- --owner <owner>: Epic owner
- --scope <scope>: Scope definition

**Epic Creation Process**:
1. Validate PAC configuration exists (suggest `/project:pac-configure` if missing)
2. Generate epic ID from name (format: epic-[kebab-case-name])
3. Create epic YAML file following PAC v0.1.0 specification in `.pac/epics/[epic-id].yaml`
4. Include required metadata: id, name, created timestamp, owner
5. Add spec with description, scope, success criteria, constraints, dependencies
6. Create epic directory structure: `.pac/epics/[epic-id]/`
7. Update PAC index if `.pac/index.yaml` exists
8. Create git branch `pac/[epic-id]` if in git repository

If information is missing, prompt user interactively for epic details.

**Next Steps**: Use `/project:pac-create-ticket --epic [epic-id]` to add tickets to this epic.
