## What it does

The command examines memory behavior, locates leaks and high-consumption areas, compares heap snapshots, and reviews garbage-collection effects. Its checklist covers object lifecycles, event-listener cleanup, object and buffer pools, streaming for large data, query-result caching, and container memory limits.

It can use Chrome DevTools, `node --inspect`, and Valgrind for profiling. The command also asks for monitoring, alert thresholds, production leak checks, and memory-pressure handling. You can target `[target-area]`, `--frontend`, `--backend`, or `--database`; its available tools are `Read`, `Bash`, `Grep`, and `Glob`. Without measurements before and after the changes, it cannot quantify the result as required.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **claude-code-templates**
```bash
npx claude-code-templates@latest --command performance/optimize-memory-usage
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/commands/optimize-memory-usage.md` — Call it with /optimize-memory-usage. For all projects use ~/.claude/commands/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.codex/prompts/optimize-memory-usage.md` — Call it with /prompts:optimize-memory-usage. Codex marks this format deprecated in favour of skills

### GitHub Copilot

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/prompts/optimize-memory-usage.prompt.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.gemini/commands/optimize-memory-usage.toml` — Gemini stores commands as TOML: the prompt text goes into the prompt field

## When to use it
- locate memory leaks in an application
- compare heap snapshots across time intervals
- tune garbage collection in Node.js
- reduce memory use in frontend components
- monitor container and database memory

## Example prompts
- Run `/optimize-memory-usage --frontend` to inspect DOM-node and event-listener leaks.
- Use `/optimize-memory-usage --backend` to review memory limits and streaming for large data.
- Ask the agent to inspect database memory with `/optimize-memory-usage --database` and adjust connection pooling.
