## What it does

The command inspects the current directory and checks Node.js and npm versions. Then it generates the Next.js directory tree. It sets up App Router with basic `layout.tsx` and `page.tsx` files.

The generated `next.config.js` includes headers like `X-Frame-Options` and `X-Content-Type-Options`. Image optimization supports AVIF and WebP. Flags can toggle TypeScript and Tailwind CSS.

Node.js and npm must be installed locally. After creating files, the template verifies the build using `npm run build` and `npm run type-check`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **claude-code-templates**
```bash
npx claude-code-templates@latest --command nextjs-vercel/nextjs-scaffold
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/commands/nextjs-scaffold.md` — Call it with /nextjs-scaffold. For all projects use ~/.claude/commands/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.codex/prompts/nextjs-scaffold.md` — Call it with /prompts:nextjs-scaffold. Codex marks this format deprecated in favour of skills

### GitHub Copilot

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/prompts/nextjs-scaffold.prompt.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.gemini/commands/nextjs-scaffold.toml` — Gemini stores commands as TOML: the prompt text goes into the prompt field

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/davila7/claude-code-templates/tree/HEAD/cli-tool/components/commands/nextjs-vercel/nextjs-scaffold.md

## When to use it
- bootstrap a Next.js App Router directory structure
- configure default security headers and image formats
- set up TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, and ESLint without manual edits
- create environment file templates like `.env.local` and `.env.example`

## Example prompts
- /nextjs-scaffold my-app --typescript --tailwind --app-router
- /nextjs-scaffold blog-frontend --tailwind
- /nextjs-scaffold client-dashboard --typescript

## Next.js Application Scaffolding

**Project Name**: $ARGUMENTS

## Environment Analysis

- Current directory: !`pwd`
- Node.js version: !`node --version`
- npm version: !`npm --version`
- Existing package.json: @package.json (if exists)

## Scaffolding Requirements

### 1. Project Initialization
Based on provided arguments, determine setup options:
- **TypeScript**: Check for `--typescript` flag or detect existing TS config
- **Tailwind CSS**: Check for `--tailwind` flag or detect existing config
- **App Router**: Check for `--app-router` flag (default for new projects)
- **ESLint/Prettier**: Always include for code quality

### 2. Next.js Configuration
Create optimized `next.config.js` with:
```javascript
/** @type {import('next').NextConfig} */
const nextConfig = {
  experimental: {
    optimizePackageImports: ['lucide-react', '@heroicons/react'],
  },
  images: {
    formats: ['image/webp', 'image/avif'],
    deviceSizes: [640, 750, 828, 1080, 1200, 1920, 2048, 3840],
  },
  async headers() {
    return [
      {
        source: '/(.*)',
        headers: [
          {
            key: 'X-Frame-Options',
            value: 'DENY',
          },
          {
            key: 'X-Content-Type-Options',
            value: 'nosniff',
          },
        ],
      },
    ];
  },
};
```

### 3. Essential Dependencies
Install core dependencies:
- **Production**: `next`, `react`, `react-dom`
- **Development**: `eslint`, `eslint-config-next`, `typescript` (if TS), `@types/*` (if TS)
- **Optional**: `tailwindcss`, `prettier`, `husky`, `lint-staged`

### 4. Project Structure
Create optimal directory structure:
```
│   ├── globals.css
│   ├── layout.tsx
├── components/             # Reusable components
│   └── ui/                # UI primitives
├── lib/                   # Utilities and configurations
├── public/                # Static assets
├── types/                 # TypeScript type definitions
├── .env.example           # Environment template
├── .gitignore
├── next.config.js
└── tsconfig.json          # If TypeScript
