## What it does

The command inspects a Next.js project: `next.config.js`, `package.json`, `tsconfig.json` and the contents of `.next/`, then lists production and dev dependencies along with the output of `npm audit`. From there it shows how to wire up `@next/bundle-analyzer` and which scripts to add to `package.json` for a build with a report.

Inside are ready config blocks: `splitChunks` with separate chunks for vendors, UI libraries and utils, `optimizePackageImports` for `lucide-react`, `@heroicons/react`, `date-fns` and `lodash`, plus size thresholds for First Load JS, individual chunks and the whole bundle. Dynamic imports via `next/dynamic` and swaps from heavy libraries to tree-shaking-friendly ones are covered too.

It assumes dependencies are already installed — without `npm install` the `npm list` and `npm audit` steps return nothing useful. A build with analysis needs `@next/bundle-analyzer` and `cross-env` in devDependencies. The command text cuts off inside the image optimization example, so the `next/image` section only covers what made it into the file.

The thresholds in the config are a reference point, not a hard build limit. If First Load JS crosses 300KB, that is a reason to check what is pulling weight into the client bundle.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **claude-code-templates**
```bash
npx claude-code-templates@latest --command nextjs-vercel/nextjs-bundle-analyzer
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/commands/nextjs-bundle-analyzer.md` — Call it with /nextjs-bundle-analyzer. For all projects use ~/.claude/commands/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.codex/prompts/nextjs-bundle-analyzer.md` — Call it with /prompts:nextjs-bundle-analyzer. Codex marks this format deprecated in favour of skills

### GitHub Copilot

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/prompts/nextjs-bundle-analyzer.prompt.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.gemini/commands/nextjs-bundle-analyzer.toml` — Gemini stores commands as TOML: the prompt text goes into the prompt field

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/davila7/claude-code-templates/tree/HEAD/cli-tool/components/commands/nextjs-vercel/nextjs-bundle-analyzer.md

## When to use it
- find which libraries bloat the Next.js client bundle
- set up `@next/bundle-analyzer` and build scripts that emit a report
- split one shared chunk into vendors, UI libraries and utils
- swap heavy imports for tree-shaking-friendly ones
- check First Load JS and per-chunk sizes

## Example prompts
- /nextjs-bundle-analyzer --analyze
- /nextjs-bundle-analyzer --build --report
- /nextjs-bundle-analyzer

## Next.js Bundle Analyzer

**Analysis Mode**: $ARGUMENTS

## Current Project Analysis

### Build Configuration
- Next.js config: @next.config.js
- Package.json: @package.json
- TypeScript config: @tsconfig.json (if exists)
- Build output: !`ls -la .next/ 2>/dev/null || echo "No build found"`

### Dependencies Analysis
- Production dependencies: !`npm list --prod --depth=0 2>/dev/null || echo "Run npm install first"`
- Development dependencies: !`npm list --dev --depth=0 2>/dev/null || echo "Run npm install first"`
- Package vulnerabilities: !`npm audit --audit-level=moderate 2>/dev/null || echo "No audit available"`

## Bundle Analysis Setup

### 1. Install Bundle Analyzer
```bash
# Install webpack-bundle-analyzer
npm install --save-dev @next/bundle-analyzer
# Or use built-in Next.js analyzer
npm install --save-dev cross-env
```

### 2. Configure Next.js Bundle Analyzer
```javascript
// next.config.js
const withBundleAnalyzer = require('@next/bundle-analyzer')({
  enabled: process.env.ANALYZE === 'true',
});
/** @type {import('next').NextConfig} */
const nextConfig = {
  // Your existing config
  experimental: {
    optimizePackageImports: [
      'lucide-react',
      '@heroicons/react',
      'date-fns',
      'lodash',
    ],
  },
  webpack: (config, { buildId, dev, isServer, defaultLoaders, webpack }) => {
    // Bundle analysis optimizations
    if (!dev && !isServer) {
      config.optimization.splitChunks = {
        chunks: 'all',
        cacheGroups: {
          default: false,
          vendors: false,
          // Vendor chunk for common libraries
          vendor: {
            name: 'vendors',
            chunks: 'all',
            test: /node_modules/,
            priority: 20,
          },
          // Common chunk for shared code
          common: {
            name: 'commons',
            minChunks: 2,
            chunks: 'all',
            priority: 10,
            reuseExistingChunk: true,
            enforce: true,
          },
          // UI libraries chunk
          ui: {
            name: 'ui-libs',
            chunks: 'all',
            test: /node_modules\/(react|react-dom|@radix-ui|@headlessui)/,
            priority: 15,
          },
          // Utility libraries chunk
          utils: {
            name: 'utils',
            chunks: 'all',
            test: /node_modules\/(lodash|date-fns|clsx|classnames)/,
            priority: 15,
          },
        },
      };
    }
    return config;
  },
};
module.exports = withBundleAnalyzer(nextConfig);
```

### 3. Package.json Scripts
```json
{
  "scripts": {
    "analyze": "cross-env ANALYZE=true next build",
    "analyze:server": "cross-env BUNDLE_ANALYZE=server next build",
    "analyze:browser": "cross-env BUNDLE_ANALYZE=browser next build",
    "build:analyze": "npm run build && npm run analyze"
  }
}
```

## Bundle Analysis Execution

### 1. Generate Analysis Report
```bash
# Full bundle analysis
ANALYZE=true npm run build
# Server-side bundle analysis
BUNDLE_ANALYZE=server npm run build
# Client-side bundle analysis
BUNDLE_ANALYZE=browser npm run build
# Production build with analysis
npm run analyze
```

### 2. Bundle Size Check
```bash
# Check current bundle size
ls -lah .next/static/chunks/ | head -20
