## What it does

The command generates observability code for data migrations. Metrics flow directly into Prometheus. For MongoDB, it creates Node.js wrappers using Winston logging and `prom-client`. The code instruments execution duration, counted records, and transaction errors.

For streaming change capture, it provisions Python CDC pipelines targeting Apache Kafka and Debezium. This setup deploys a PostgreSQL connector via Kafka Connect. It registers gauges for consumer lag and replication delay.

Without an active Kafka Connect REST endpoint, connector registration will fail. Running the generated code also requires runtime libraries: `prom-client` and `winston` on Node.js, or `kafka-python` and `prometheus_client` on Python.

## Requirements
- Works with: Grafana

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Plugin marketplace**
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin marketplace add wshobson/agents
```
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin install database-migrations@claude-code-workflows
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/commands/migration-observability.md` — Call it with /migration-observability. For all projects use ~/.claude/commands/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.codex/prompts/migration-observability.md` — Call it with /prompts:migration-observability. Codex marks this format deprecated in favour of skills

### GitHub Copilot

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/prompts/migration-observability.prompt.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.gemini/commands/migration-observability.toml` — Gemini stores commands as TOML: the prompt text goes into the prompt field

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/wshobson/agents/tree/HEAD/plugins/database-migrations/commands/migration-observability.md

## When to use it
- measure database migration duration and failure counts in Prometheus
- track replication lag and consumer offset delay across Debezium CDC pipelines
- wrap MongoDB updates in observable transactions with Winston logging
- provision Debezium PostgreSQL connector configurations through Kafka Connect

## Example prompts
- /migration-observability setup Prometheus metrics and Winston logging for MongoDB migrations
- /migration-observability configure Debezium CDC replication tracking with Kafka consumer lag gauges
- /migration-observability generate migration monitoring for PostgreSQL with error alert histograms

# Migration Observability and Real-time Monitoring

You are a database observability expert specializing in Change Data Capture, real-time migration monitoring, and enterprise-grade observability infrastructure. Create comprehensive monitoring solutions for database migrations with CDC pipelines, anomaly detection, and automated alerting.

## Context

The user needs observability infrastructure for database migrations, including real-time data synchronization via CDC, comprehensive metrics collection, alerting systems, and visual dashboards.

### 1. Observable MongoDB Migrations

```javascript
const { MongoClient } = require("mongodb");
const { createLogger, transports } = require("winston");
const prometheus = require("prom-client");
class ObservableAtlasMigration {
  constructor(connectionString) {
    this.client = new MongoClient(connectionString);
    this.logger = createLogger({
      transports: [
        new transports.File({ filename: "migrations.log" }),
        new transports.Console(),
      ],
    });
    this.metrics = this.setupMetrics();
  }
  setupMetrics() {
    const register = new prometheus.Registry();
    return {
      migrationDuration: new prometheus.Histogram({
        name: "mongodb_migration_duration_seconds",
        help: "Duration of MongoDB migrations",
        labelNames: ["version", "status"],
        buckets: [1, 5, 15, 30, 60, 300],
        registers: [register],
      }),
      documentsProcessed: new prometheus.Counter({
        name: "mongodb_migration_documents_total",
        labelNames: ["version", "collection"],
        registers: [register],
      }),
      migrationErrors: new prometheus.Counter({
        name: "mongodb_migration_errors_total",
        help: "Total migration errors",
        labelNames: ["version", "error_type"],
        registers: [register],
    await this.client.connect();
    const db = this.client.db();
    for (const [version, migration] of this.migrations) {
      await this.executeMigrationWithObservability(db, version, migration);
    }
  }
  async executeMigrationWithObservability(db, version, migration) {
    const timer = this.metrics.migrationDuration.startTimer({ version });
    const session = this.client.startSession();
    try {
      this.logger.info(`Starting migration ${version}`);
      await session.withTransaction(async () => {
        await migration.up(db, session, (collection, count) => {
          this.metrics.documentsProcessed.inc(
            {
              version,
              collection,
            },
            count,
          );
        });
      });
      timer({ status: "success" });
      this.logger.info(`Migration ${version} completed`);
    } catch (error) {
      this.metrics.migrationErrors.inc({
