## What it does

The command queries your Gmail inbox and presents unread email headers in a clean table format. By default, it retrieves up to 20 messages matching the `is:unread` search filter, providing the sender, subject line, and date.

You can refine the output using CLI parameters: `--max` changes the message limit, `--query` accepts custom Gmail search queries, and `--labels` includes message labels in the output. The operation is strictly read-only, ensuring mailbox contents remain untouched.

Execution requires the Google Workspace CLI (`gws`) on your machine and an active session verified via `gws auth status`. Missing credentials will prevent Claude Code from querying the mailbox.

## Requirements
- Works with: Google Workspace, Gmail

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **claude-code-templates**
```bash
npx claude-code-templates@latest --command google-workspace/gws-gmail-triage
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/commands/gws-gmail-triage.md` — Call it with /gws-gmail-triage. For all projects use ~/.claude/commands/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.codex/prompts/gws-gmail-triage.md` — Call it with /prompts:gws-gmail-triage. Codex marks this format deprecated in favour of skills

### GitHub Copilot

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/prompts/gws-gmail-triage.prompt.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.gemini/commands/gws-gmail-triage.toml` — Gemini stores commands as TOML: the prompt text goes into the prompt field

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/davila7/claude-code-templates/tree/HEAD/cli-tool/components/commands/google-workspace/gws-gmail-triage.md

## When to use it
- scan unread Gmail messages directly from the terminal
- filter incoming unread emails by sender or custom query
- review message dates and subjects without opening a browser

## Example prompts
- /gws-gmail-triage
- /gws-gmail-triage --max 5 --query 'from:boss'
- /gws-gmail-triage --labels
