## What it does

The command reads your repository and lays out the state in sections: branch type (main, develop, feature, release, hotfix), sync with remote, working directory changes, commit history and the merge target. It runs on `git` and file reads only, so it stays out of your way.

The report changes with the branch. On `feature/*` you get progress plus a nudge to run tests. On `release/*` there is a checklist covering CHANGELOG and the version in package.json. On `hotfix/*` the output flags severity and walks through the emergency PR steps. Stand on `main` and it warns you that you are on the production branch, then points at `/feature`, `/release` or `/hotfix` to start new work.

Handy when the branch list has grown and you no longer remember which one is two commits ahead and which has been sitting since last month. It also surfaces stale branches and suggests the next version number from the commits you have accumulated.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **claude-code-templates**
```bash
npx claude-code-templates@latest --command git/flow-status
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/commands/flow-status.md` — Call it with /flow-status. For all projects use ~/.claude/commands/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.codex/prompts/flow-status.md` — Call it with /prompts:flow-status. Codex marks this format deprecated in favour of skills

### GitHub Copilot

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/prompts/flow-status.prompt.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.gemini/commands/flow-status.toml` — Gemini stores commands as TOML: the prompt text goes into the prompt field

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/davila7/claude-code-templates/tree/HEAD/cli-tool/components/commands/git/flow-status.md

## When to use it
- tell which Git Flow branch you are on and where it merges
- see how many commits ahead or behind remote a branch is
- spot uncommitted changes before wrapping up work
- check the release checklist: CHANGELOG, version, tests
- find stale branches and decide what to do with them

## Example prompts
- /flow-status
- show me the Git Flow status of this repo
- where does my current branch merge to?
