## What it does

The command inspects a codebase for error-handling patterns such as `try/catch` blocks, unfinished promise chains, and empty catch handlers. Its Python analysis script also checks logging usage and scans dependency files including `package.json`, `requirements.txt`, `go.mod`, and `pom.xml`.

The shown Sentry setup covers environment and release values, tracing, profiling, HTTP and Express hooks, and database integrations. Events pass through filters before delivery: cookies are removed, debug console breadcrumbs are dropped, and extra context is attached. The analyzer’s shown logic does not cover Java and Go parsing, so that part needs review before relying on the report.

Claude Code installs the command through its plugin marketplace. Codex and Cursor use their own prompt or command file locations.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Plugin marketplace**
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin marketplace add wshobson/agents
```
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin install error-debugging@claude-code-workflows
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/commands/error-trace.md` — Call it with /error-trace. For all projects use ~/.claude/commands/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.codex/prompts/error-trace.md` — Call it with /prompts:error-trace. Codex marks this format deprecated in favour of skills

### GitHub Copilot

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/prompts/error-trace.prompt.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.gemini/commands/error-trace.toml` — Gemini stores commands as TOML: the prompt text goes into the prompt field

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/wshobson/agents/tree/HEAD/plugins/error-debugging/commands/error-trace.md

## When to use it
- spot unhandled errors in a codebase
- audit existing logging patterns
- connect application errors to Sentry
- remove sensitive cookies from error events

## Example prompts
- Run `/error-trace` and review the project’s unhandled error paths.
- Use `/error-trace` to configure structured logging and Sentry reporting for this application.
- Analyze `src/` with `/error-trace` and prepare changes for error monitoring.

# Error Tracking and Monitoring

You are an error tracking and observability expert specializing in implementing comprehensive error monitoring solutions. Set up error tracking systems, configure alerts, implement structured logging, and ensure teams can quickly identify and resolve production issues.

## Context

The user needs to implement or improve error tracking and monitoring. Focus on real-time error detection, meaningful alerts, error grouping, performance monitoring, and integration with popular error tracking services.
