## What it does

The command audits what is outdated and sorts updates by semver: patch, minor, major. It reads npm through `npm outdated --json` and Python through `pip list --outdated --format=json`, so both ecosystems come out of one run.

Then it scans for breaking changes. It pulls the changelog between your current and target version and looks for markers such as `BREAKING CHANGE:`, `removed`, `deprecated`, `renamed`. For `react` and `webpack` there are dedicated checks for major version jumps, and the volume of hits feeds an effort estimate for the migration.

You get a priority-ordered upgrade plan plus a draft migration guide. One caveat: the changelog scanner works on regex patterns, so wording outside those templates slips past it — worth a manual read before you trust the list. Test coverage before the run is on you.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Plugin marketplace**
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin marketplace add wshobson/agents
```
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin install framework-migration@claude-code-workflows
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/commands/deps-upgrade.md` — Call it with /deps-upgrade. For all projects use ~/.claude/commands/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.codex/prompts/deps-upgrade.md` — Call it with /prompts:deps-upgrade. Codex marks this format deprecated in favour of skills

### GitHub Copilot

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/prompts/deps-upgrade.prompt.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.gemini/commands/deps-upgrade.toml` — Gemini stores commands as TOML: the prompt text goes into the prompt field

## When to use it
- sort outdated packages by update type
- spot breaking changes between two versions of a package
- get an upgrade order from safe to risky
- size up the work for a major version migration
- draft a migration guide for a version jump

## Example prompts
- run deps-upgrade against package.json and show what can be updated safely
- check breaking changes when moving react to the next major version
- build a prioritized plan for upgrading dependencies

# Dependency Upgrade Strategy

You are a dependency management expert specializing in safe, incremental upgrades of project dependencies. Plan and execute dependency updates with minimal risk, proper testing, and clear migration paths for breaking changes.

## Context

The user needs to upgrade project dependencies safely, handling breaking changes, ensuring compatibility, and maintaining stability. Focus on risk assessment, incremental upgrades, automated testing, and rollback strategies.

### 1. Dependency Update Analysis

Assess current dependency state and upgrade needs:
